· finds difficulty paying attention, sitting still and listening to stories

· has difficulty learning nursery rhymes

· likes listening to stories but shows no interest in letters or words

· has a history of slow speech development

· gets words muddled

· finds it hard to carry out two or more instructions

· forgets the names of teachers, colours or friends

· persistent difficulty in dressing

· has 'good' and 'bad' days for no obvious reason

· has difficulty throwing, catching or kicking a ball



· has a poor standard of written work compared with oral ability

· is persistently confused by letters which look similar, particularly b/d, p/g, n/u, m/w

· has poor handwriting, with many letter reversals

· spells a word several different ways in the same piece of writing

· produces bizarre spelling

· has poor pencil grip

· loses his/her place when copying

· has difficulty remembering times tables, days of the week etc

· confuses symbols in maths e.g. + and x

· finds mental arithmetic difficult

· misunderstands questions

· finds holding a list of instructions in memory difficult

· is disorganised or forgetful

· is easily distracted

· is often in the wrong place at the wrong time

· has difficulty with punctuation or grammar

· confuses upper and lower case letters

· has difficulty taking notes in lessons

· has difficulty with the organisation of notes

· finds tasks difficult to complete on time

· appears to know more than can be written down

· omits, repeats and adds extra words when reading

· fails to recognise familiar words

· misses a line or repeats the same line twice

· finds it difficult to use dictionaries, encyclopaedias and directories

· finds memorising formulae difficult

· is excessively tired due to amount of concentration required to do relatively small tasks

· other members of the family may have similar problems.
